Iga Swiatek reaches first US Open final, will face fifth seed Ons Jabeur for a spot in U.S. Open crown
Ons Jabeur will face Iga Swiatek on Sunday for a spot in the U.S. Open final after both players shot a 68 in Friday’s opening round of the tournament at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center by the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, Queens.
Swiatek, 25, who had a career high ranking of No. 14 at the time of her U.S. Open entry, will be seeking a third major title in her second appearance at the event after winning in 2015 and 2016.
On Friday, she was the top seed and second-ranked player in the opening singles draw of the tournament, held in her hometown.
Jabeur, who was the 21st-ranked player in the world at the time of her U.S. Open entry, reached the second round with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Elizaveta Kulichkina with the tournament’s previous best-ever result at the event for a woman.
Swiatek, who won her first title, the Australian Open in January, is seeking her second Grand Slam title. She was the top seed in Flushing Meadows’ opening doubles draw which saw Agnieszka Radwanska and Karolína Plíšková reach the fourth round.
She will face Karolína Plíšková on Sunday for another place in the championship.
