Maria Sakkari is the top seed in the Porsche Grand Prix

Top-seeded Greek Maria Sakkari edged out last year’s semifinalist Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the semi-finals of the Porsche Grand Prix on Thursday.

No. 5 seed Sakkari, a 24-year-old with a 5-foot-8 height, rebounded from a poor performance in the first set to claim her first victory in two weeks. The next stop on the 2017 WTA Tour is the season-ending championship in Singapore next week.

Sakkari will also advance to her second career main draw final in Hobart with next week’s win. Sakkari outlasted Russia’s Ekaterina Makarova 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 in the opening round on Monday. Sakkari finished tied for second in the Miami Open earlier this year, which later earned her the honor of being Russia’s official female ambassador at the Russian Grand Prix, becoming the first woman from Russia to hold the position.

The WTA Finals will be held at the Singapore Indoor Stadium for the first time this year. The eight-team field includes Serena Williams, Karolina Pliskova, Sloane Stephens, Garbine Muguruza, and Sloane Stephens. The season-ending tournament will run Nov. 13-19.

Sakkari is the first Greek player to reach the finals of the Porsche Grand Prix since Stefanie Voegele won in 2012. She’s also the fourth top-seeded player to reach the final in Stuttgart, joining Roger Federer (twice), and Angelique Kerber.
